NewsMonterey Pop Fest Turns 40 With Double LPWas it really forty years ago that our hippy parents donned bell-bottoms, flashed each other peace signs and swayed along to the sounds of the first ever rock and roll music festival? Well I'm not having an acid flashback, so it must mean that Razor And Tie (with a double-shot of help from Starbucks) is releasing Monterey International Pop Festival, a double disc chock-full of live tracks from the legendary 1967 California music fest. Available June 5, the songs in this collection mark Jimi Hendrix's first big gig in the states, the first major appearance of Janis Joplin, plus tunes from the Who, Otis Redding and two previously unreleased versions of Simon And Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound" and "The Sounds Of Silence." "Listening to the CD and watching Pennebaker's documentary about the Festival, the vitality of this music comes back to you," says Michael Krumper, Senior V.P. of Marketing at Razor And Tie. "Radio has made some of the studio versions of these songs overfamiliar, so that you barely hear them when they are played on air, but the live performances remind you that before this music was 'classic rock'?it was groundbreaking." The documentary Krumper speaks of, Monterey Pop was screened at this year's SXSW festival, and a retrospective doc is in the works over at VH1, who plan to air the flick on the MIPF anniversary, June 16. "Personally, it made me look at some of these bands differently," Krumper adds. "I hadn't paid much attention to the Jefferson Airplane previously, but after listening to their performances at Monterey, they brought to mind Sonic Youth, Broken Social Scene and other collectives like them that have that kind of male/female vocal exchanges. Fans of music, indie rock and otherwise will make these kind of connections when they hear this CD." The 26 tracks were hand-picked by music biz veteran Lou Adler, a co-organizer (along with Michelle and John Phillips of the Mamas And The Papas, producer Alan Pariser, and publicist Derek Taylor) of the summer of love fest. Proceeds from the sale of the two-CD set will benefit the Monterey International Pop Festival Foundation and will be available at retail music stores. Or you can just pick one up along with your half-calf mocha chai tea at Starbucks, you free sprit, you. Tracklist For Monterey International Pop Festival Disc One: 01.
